Recent research has demonstrated the advantage that students studying the International Baccalureate has over students studying local curriculla. Research was undertaken by the University of Western Sydney in 2013 comparing the acquisition of critical thinking skills in senior secondary students. The conclusion made in the study was that students studying the International Baccalureate Diploma Programme were better prepared for University than non-Diploma students.
An increasing number of Australian schools are offering IB Programmes and the proportion of students studying the Diploma Programme is increasing in schools offering both the Diploma and the local curriculum. In NSW the Illawarra Grammar School is one school increasing its IB offering
