Located on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, Woodleigh School is an independent, coeducational school comprising two Junior Campuses, Minimbah Frankston South and Penbank in Moorooduc and a Senior Campus in Langwarrin South.

Woodleigh School introduced the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) at its junior campuses in 2019. The implementation process is a multi-year initiative that will see teachers and school leaders from Minimbah and Penbank gradually adopting the PYP to guide collaborative planning, teaching, learning, assessment and reporting from ECC to Year 6.
The PYP is a natural fit for the Woodleigh School Personalised Learning Model which aims to develop independent, resilient, creative and compassionate individuals who can find personal success in life, while making a positive contribution to the communities in which they live.
The IB PYP Framework
The PYP is a holistic curriculum framework focused on supporting all aspects of student development.
Informed by research into how students learn, how educators teach, and the principles and practice of effective assessment, the programme places an emphasis on inquiry-based learning. The framework builds from a central focus upon the student to include rich learning within and across traditional subject areas, the integration of real-world contexts and the development of deep conceptual understandings by students. The curriculum structure replicates the key learning areas set out in the Victorian Curriculum, with the traditional subject areas of English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Arts, Science, Physical, Social and Personal Education all retaining their relevance.
Significantly, the PYP offers opportunities for a transdisciplinary approach, providing students with opportunities to engage with learning that has relevance across subject areas and connects with the real world. There is a long tradition of this type of transdisciplinary learning at Woodleigh School, as evidenced through keystone programs such as the Penbank – Wugularr partnership, the Minimbah Creek and Discovery Day programs and the cross-campus Year 6 learning journeys to Canberra. The PYP provides a common, research-based structure to enhance and expand upon these peak student experiences.
Alignment
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a natural fit for teaching and learning at Woodleigh School. It helps to develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, while nurturing independent learning and encouraging students to take on responsibility for their learning.
Importantly, the introduction of the Primary Years Programme provides a shared framework for planning, assessment and reporting across the junior campuses of Woodleigh School. There is also a strong alignment between the structures and language used in the IB Primary Years Programme and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). With Woodleigh introducing the MYP at its Senior Campus at the end of 2018, the school now has a common curriculum framework to better support students throughout their learning journey.
Woodleigh School introduced the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) to Year 7 students as part of their final unit of study in 2018. In 2020, we will build from this soft launch
to implement the programme at the school.
This process is a multi-year endeavour that will see teachers and school leaders gradually adopting the MYP to guide planning, teaching, learning, assessment and reporting across Years 7-9. The MYP is a natural fit for the Woodleigh School Personalised Learning Model which aims to develop independent, resilient, creative and compassionate individuals who can find personal success in life, while making a positive contribution to the communities in which they live.
The IB MYP Framework
The MYP is a student-centred framework, with a deliberate emphasis on the development of independent learners.
The framework builds from a central focus upon the student to include research-based approaches to teaching and learning, the integration of real-world contexts for learning and the development of deep conceptual understandings for students. The MYP curriculum structure replicates the key learning areas set out in the Victorian Curriculum, with the traditional discipline areas of English, Languages, Mathematics, Arts, Design, Humanities and Sciences remaining critically important to teaching and learning.
Significantly, the MYP also offers opportunities for students to understand bodies of knowledge from two or more subject areas, in order to integrate them and create new understandings. There is a long tradition of this type of interdisciplinary learning at Woodleigh School, as evidenced through flagship experiences such as City Bound and Hattah, with the MYP providing a research-based structure to enhance and expand upon these peak student experiences.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a natural fit for teaching and learning at Woodleigh school. It helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding and includes elements that will enhance the key features of a Woodleigh Education.

With Woodleigh also introducing the PYP in 2020, the school now has a common curriculum framework to better support students through their learning journey.
